Our story

A Washington-area foodservice name since the 1950s

Alto began in the 1950s, when refrigerator mechanics Al Reynolds and Tony Greco turned a request to sell refrigerators into a restaurant-equipment business. Alto became known for turn-key solutions and built many of Washington, D.C.’s premier restaurants of the day.

Jack Hartley, who had joined Alto’s sales team in the 1960s, revived the name in 1982 and added his own: Alto-Hartley. Since then the company has grown from equipment sales into project management and, most recently, kitchen design — serving restaurant, corporate, healthcare, government and education kitchens across the Washington/Baltimore region. Current president Peter Huebner joined in 1993 as a project manager.
